The DDP has been designed as a cultural hub at the center of Dongdaemun, a historic district of Seoul that is now renowned for its 24-hour shopping and cafes. DDP is a place for people of all ages; a catalyst for the instigation and exchange of ideas and for new technologies and media to be explored. The variety for public spaces within DDP include Art/Exhibition Halls, Conference Hall, Design Museum, Design Labs & Academy hall and a Media Center.
Advanced automotive surfacing techniques were integrated into the design to allow a precise understanding of the geometry for the building envelope. A computational pipeline was established to surface the geometry, recursively panelize it, and classify the output for different manufacturing processes. A multi-pin stamping machine was designed to allow mass customization for the envelope.
